The Beginning

May 11th 1985 saw a fire at Valley Parade, Bradford during Bradford City’s final game of the season vs Lincoln City. Prior to kick off, the Bradford City captain Peter Jackson was presented with the Division 3 Championship trophy. The league title had been won and the following 90 minutes were mealy a formality. This had been one of Bradford City’s most successful seasons in their 82 year history. It was to be a day of celebration.

At approximately 3.40pm with the scores still at 0-0 a fire broke out in the main stand. Over the next 4 minutes the fire took hold of the whole stand. 54 Bradford City and 2 Lincoln City fans lost their lives, over 260 more were physically injured.

In the aftermath of the fire a specialist burns unit was set up at Bradford University which continues to treat people to this day.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the fire and the set up of the burns unit. Bradford’s Telegraph and Argus newspaper, supported by Bradford City Football Club are running a campaign to raise £100,000 to ensure the survival of the Burns unit for future years to come.

As anyone who knows me will know, I am a keen cyclist. With this in mind I have decided that what better way to support the Burns Unit than with a sponsored bike ride to, well, somewhere.
The intention of this Blog is to record my planning, preparation and hopefully the completion of my big trip. This will allow anyone who is vaguely interested in following my trip to see what I have been up to (along with anyone else I can press gang in to reading my waffle). Hopefully it will also give me a permanent record of what will be a great achievement if I can pull it off.

So, wish me luck. Here goes….
